I love how each one plays off the other and creates a dynamic silhouette. There are a few key points to keep in mind when mixing, you don’t want to have too many bold patterns next to one another, or two similar patterns right by one another. For example in this picture, I have two plaid pillows, three ornate or floral pillows, two striped, and one solid. These are all in like color palettes and no like patterns are right next to one another. Then for furniture, I have the two accent chairs in a light color that matches the other furniture but they have a subtle stripe pattern to them. Our rug is a vintage pattern that is playing nicely with the ornate pillows. The rug is a vintage style, but was brand new and fits current trends. I mixed these items into a space that is overwhelming and filled with thrifted pieces. Aside from those three items I listed, everything else in this living room picture was thrifted. The chair I kept in it’s original finish, but the hutch I modified and refinished with a more current green color and rattan handles. This shows how you can have something old, but bring it into current times by giving it a facelift. This couch was a Facebook Marketplace find that was a brand new Pottery Barn Sofa for $700. The couch color and shape may not have been my exact first choice for our space, but it fits most qualities I needed and was in our price range. This end table brings me more joy than I would have ever imagined. I never knew I needed a table like this until I was thrifting one day and saw it for $12. It fits our space perfectly and the ornate details on it pair beautifully with the more streamlined modern shape of our sofa. This tool was incredible because it made it easy and accurate when cutting through sections of an entire 8 ft x 4 ft plywood board. Without the guide it would have been more difficult making sure my cut was straight and it would have also been harder to reach certain areas. After that, I decided to add some front trim pieces on with my brad nailer so the entire cubby system would feel more finished. Adding trim pieces not only gives a more professional look, but it also is a great way to cover the plywood edging that doesn’t look nice. Which are practically endless. It’s usually a matter of if you want dark, light, rustic, or even modern. Currently, in 2021 there are a few trends happening with flooring. Those being blonde, whitewashed, honey/copper, gray, and greige colored floors. My personal favorite is the blonde/white oak style. This is a flooring color that I think is extremely versatile and timeless. I enjoy that it has a warmer tone to it so it doesn’t make your space feel cold. Blonde/White Oak is what we put into our home and we used a Luxury Plank Vinyl from Floor & Decor. We are installing it on our own and it’s going really well so far. It’s all tongue and groove so you just cut the pieces to size, line them up, and make sure you’re clicking in on the right sides. This white worked perfect in both our North and South-facing windows. I also tested the color in our East-facing room too and it worked wonderfully. I found it to be bright and crisp but had the perfect amount of warmth to it so it didn’t feel sterile and gray. I would highly recommend using this color if you’re looking to brighten your space but still have it feel like a welcoming white. The quality of Benjamin Moore paint has been great as well. It applies to our walls in thick coats and spreads evenly. These words are often used interchangeably but they are very different. Hue is what color family it comes from, so hue would be those primary, secondary, and tertiary colors I had talked about in my What Design School Taught Me, Part 1 post (the colors in the photo). Tint would be that pure color or hue we just talked about but mixed with white, think pastels here (red + white = pink). Tone is when true gray (equal parts black + white) are mixed into the color. If you mix too much gray into the color it will remove the bright nature of it and create a muddy tone (blue + gray = soft muddy blue tone). Lastly, shade is when you have a true color and mix black into it (opposite of tint). I’m going to use styling a bookshelf/built-in as an example for this. When approaching decorating this area you want to steer clear of having it look cluttered, while also not having it too sparse where it looks like you didn’t know what to put on it. To accomplish this, figure out what your point of view will be. How will you see this shelf? Is it above something? Does it go from the ceiling to the floor? Is it super wide or narrow? Will you usually be looking at it from a front view or is it nestled in a corner? These are important questions to ask before decorating because it changes what elements you want to put there. For instance, if this was a narrow short shelf, you wouldn’t want to fill each shelf with large, heavy, or wide objects like a basket because it would take up all of the shelves. Each shelf feels like it was thought about individually instead of as an entire bookshelf. So when you step back your eye freaks out a bit and doesn’t know where to rest. Giving your eye a place to pause is crucial when designing a nook or shelving unit. If every shelf is packed tightly with interesting items there’s just too much to consume. These shelves should either have the books in smaller chunks or have them all in 2 lower shelves lined up. Side Note: Color-coding your books is a nice way to make them visually pleasing and unique. Another idea would be flipping them around so you don’t see the mismatched spines and all you see are the neutral-colored pages. Ask yourself “Did I create enough depth between objects?” If you never layer any pieces in front or behind one another everything will fall flat and lack visual interest. Instead, consider putting one frame in front of another or a vase in front of that frame. Layering picture frames is a great way to have more than one displayed while also making your shelf feel alive and not stale. Alongside depth, comes the balance aspect mentioned at the very beginning of this post. I may be bringing up balance last, but it truly is important. The only reason I’m mentioning it so late is because I wanted you to have knowledge on all the aforementioned elements in order to truly understand balance. Since I wasn’t sure which store would be best for olive tree branches I stopped in at 3 stores I figured would have good options. The first being Joanns, this is always my go-to spot for any faux florals/greenery (this is where I bought all my florals/greenery for our wedding). It honestly was perfect timing to do this DIY too because most places have their olive branches out with their spring florals, which Joanns did. Lucky me, they had 30% off all spring florals (making each stem cost $5.59). Then I went to Hobby Lobby, where I found thicker stems that were more full than the Joanns ones. These olive branches were marked 50% off at the time (making each stem cost $7). Lastly, I stopped at Walmart because I knew they had some during fall time. They still had olive branches in stock so I bought all that they had there too. If you’re interested in an item rip off the bottom portion of the tag and hold onto it while you’re in the store. This is like “putting it in your cart” except you can’t physically fit it because it’s a furniture item. If you decide later that you don’t want it then just tuck the ripped tag part you took back under the upper half of the tag that’s still on the furniture piece. If you decide you want to buy it, show the bottom tag to the cashier. Note: if you are walking through the store and you hear the overhead voice say “if you are holding the bottom half of the “______ item” please come to the front checkout to claim your item. This just means someone else in the store is inquiring about that item you “have in your cart” and they want to make sure someone in the store has the bottom tag to buy, not that someone left with the bottom tag and never bought it. But instead of letting it absolutely cripple me, I used this experience as fuel to work on myself. To prove to whoever needed to see it that I don’t need to be at a company that didn’t care about me. I needed to find what I was put on this Earth to do. I always thought my place was at a company that made me feel good when I said I worked for them. In reality, my place was where I could unapologetically be myself. Where I could decide where I wanted my future to go.
